The most famous bookstore in Paris doesn't sell books in French
It doesn’t even has its original name. But is a mandatory stop.
Shakespeare & Company was renamed this way a few decades ago, in honor of another (now defunct) bookstore that saw Hemingway and Joyce bonding and stuff. If you’re a fan of the Before Trilogy like myself, you know this is the place where Jesse has a reading at the beginning of the Before Sunset movie, and Celine waits for him at the door.
They have a room where they hosts the writers who come for readings every other week, and up until recently you could actually spend a few nights there for free, in exchange for helping out a few hours by day! Don’t know if it still works, try it and let me know! Shakespeare & Company, 37 Rue de la Bûcherie, metro line 4 Saint Michel.
